Denmark

Denmark is a small country made up of the Jutland Peninsula and over 500 islands with an abundance of places to visit. From the capital city of Copenhagen where historical royal castles can be found buried amidst the surrounding forestland to the beautiful streets of Odense, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark truly is a land of fantasy.

Denmark's capital city, Copenhagen, is located in Sjælland, an island bejeweled with ancient castles associated with the northern royal family. Hans Christian Andersen, the literary genius behind some of the world's most famous fairy tales, grew up in the town of Odense in Fyn. Danish spirit provides the visitors with feelings of relaxation and tranquility.

Ribe - A leap back in time

Ribe is a charming town on Jutland in the south west of Denmark, close to the Wadden Sea. Dating back to the 8th century, the age of Vikings, it is the oldest town in Denmark.

Dyrehaven Park

Dyrehaven Park offers a great combination of outdoor activities such as cycling, trekking and horse riding but it also holds Bakken amusement park, one of the oldest in the world. Dyrehaven is a popular retreat for both locals and tourists who seek a bit of tranquility.

Bakken Amusement Park

Dyrehavbakken is one of the oldest amusement parks in Northern Europe. It was built 100 years before Tivoli Park. The wooden jet coaster, which is said to be the oldest jet coaster in the world, is definitely worth trying. This park is also used as the base for the official international Santa Claus meeting, held every year in July.

Roskilde

Roskilde is known as the ancient city, with a history of over 1000 years and was Denmark’s capital from around 960 to 1536. Even now, it is an hub for commerce and industry. Each summer Roskilde hosts one of Europe’s largest music event, called the Roskilde Festival. It is a 30 min train ride form Copenhagen to Roskilde.

The Hans Christian Andersen Parade

A performance with 35 of Andersen's characters that appear in his particularly famous fairytales. It is carried out every day during the summer in a park behind the Andersen Museum.

Bornholm

Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, located to the east of Denmark, the south of Sweden, and the north of Poland. Its principal town is Rønne. The main industries on the island include fishing, arts and crafts like glass making and pottery using locally worked clay, and dairy farming. Bicycling around on the island is a popular activity to do in the summer. You can also enjoy yachting, fishing and golf. Highlights include: Hammershus Castle ruins (Hammershus Ruiner), Bornholm Museum, and Østerlars Church (Østerlars Kirke).


Tåsinge

Tåsinge is a Danish island south of Funen and is famous for its castle, Valdemars Slot, which was also the setting for the death of Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre. Although it was constructed by Christian IV in 1643, it became the property of Niels Juel, the hero of the navy, in 1678, and was redesigned as a baroque-style building. It is open to the public, but the castle is also used as a concert venue, a gallery and place for weddings. The castle has an excellent restaurant in the basement which also features a yacht museum and a tea house. Check website for opening times.

Den Fynske Landsby

An open-air museum located approximately 4km south of the city centre. 25 or more farmhouses typical of Funen during the 18th and 19th century are on display. The museum consists of a farm with people living and working there during the summer. A great activity to do during the summer.

Ilulissat

Ilulissat is the third largest settlement in Greenland and situate about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Illulisat also means "The Icebergs” and is Greenland's most popular tourist destination. At its eastern end is the Jakobshavn Isbræ glacier which is the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. The glacier flows at a rate of 20-35 metres per day, resulting in around 20 billion tonnes of icebergs calved off and passing out of the fjord every year. The Ilulissat Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. In the summer, you can catch the "Midnight Cruise" under the midnight sun (end of May - end of July). You can also enjoy activates such ice hiking to the "Ice Fjord," dog sledding and glacier cruises.

Deer Park (Dyrehaven)

This beautiful deer park is 15 minutes from Copenhagen by train. The park used to be a hunting area for the royal family in the second half of the 17th century, but is today a place of recreation and relaxation. Here you can enjoy horseback riding or take in the scenery on a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride.

Langeland

Langeland is an island located between the Great Belt and Bay of Kiel. It is a great holiday spot that offers many excellent beaches and beautiful landscapes. The cultural side of Langeland is best known for its family friendly festival which has grown to become Denmark's greatest garden party. Langeland is optimal for tourists that enjoy fishing and marine sports. It takes approximately 1 ½ h from Zealand, 45 min from Lolland, and 1 h from Ærø by ferry.

Disko Bay

Also called Qasigiannguit and is located south of Ilulissat Isfjord (Ice Fjord). It is a completely unspoilt district in a striking natural area and is known as the green heart of Disko Bay. The area is characterised by warm summers (up to 27c) Disco Bay is ideal for hiking in the summer time, with gentle hills, tundra plains, green passes, blue fjords and mountain tops. The dog sled season starts as early as December. From July to October you can enjoy whale spotting.


Narsaq

Narsaq also known as the “Green paradise of Greenland” is a true pearl of beauty in the otherwise extreme arctic nature of Greenland. The waters around the Narsaq peninsula are rich with seals, Salmon, Arctic Char and small whales. Even reindeers are present in this area. Narsaq is also close to Uunartoq which is known for its hot springs and waterfalls. Hiking tours are popular in this area, the Nanortalik hiking route is recommended.
